They were one of the earliest and best organized of the temperance movements in England [1835], and later [1842] in the United States. After the American Civil War, their work would take on a uniquely American flair with the rise of the bar smashing pub brawling, Carrie Nation. Their organization is evident in the publication, which includes medical, moral,
