When I was building out my shop space, running 2x4s horizontally and joining them to the vertical steel 2x2 square uprights proved a bit of a task. I have used a variety of ways and flat plate bar but ultimately over time and mounting weight on whatever I am hanging off the wood the brackets would begin to bend or shift. I came up with this design
